Autumn in a box

Still life with acorns. It's pretty is autumn so why not single some of it out for attention. Taking something that is already perfectly formed and beautiful and making it art is the challenge of photography and the thinking and the planning are as considered as the execution and the ultimate visibility.

I don't pretend to understand it all but sometimes it lets me be creative too. The Hepworth, Wakefield. A lovely place and lovely people.

Sometimes little moments appear.

Sometimes you need to add the mood back in.

Sometimes you need to show the feel of a place as much as its likeness. Pere Lachaise is such a special place, full of memories.

Gone but never so remembered

Pere Lachaise, stunning place and I'm awestruck by the romance, mysticism and sheer effort that goes into wanting to remember those that once were and ensure that they continue to be so in another way.

One day it'll all be different

Some of the past has escaped the developers thus far and we get to revel in the beauty of old buildings. This one in Wakefield, filled with stories no doubt but no longer singing to the hymns of industry.

Someone elses art

I love art and I photograph it to see it my way. I don't want a record, a catalogue shot, I want my image of their image.

Poppy Time

This year the poppies were all planted in out of the way places so this is one from before.

Storm Birds

Ahh the british summer. Makes for more interesting pictures though. I'm not a blue sky photographer but it's always good to be around at the right time.

Another season

Just like when we were kids and the film we dropped into Boots came back with two Christmases and people we almost no longer recognised I still have film in cameras for far too long. This I thought was nice enough to show out of season.

Led along a path

Only 2 days old this one, I'm not usually this quick. If you go without a plan you see more and do more because you're there for the moments.

Still life with tulips

I'm not a fan of cut flowers dying away on a mantelpiece but there is a beauty to it. It's a philosophy of decay and reveal as the wrapping comes away and the structure shines through.

It's a favourite.

Every now and again I'm in the right place at the right time. This is a favourite of mine from a while ago but it doesn't age and, in 'big landscape' terms it has a sense of place.

It's still life

Funny thing about nature, strip it right back and it's just as enchanting as it was in full bloom.

Gritstone

Peak District rocks, sentinels in the landscape, shaped by years and years.

Colour colour

More from the artist's box. I don't know how old this paint is but it's nice to think how it spent its life, bringing pleasure to a creative mind.

Remains of old artists

I bought an old box of materials just for a series of still lifes. There are still pictures to be had when there are no more pictures to be made.

Into the valley

Nature clinging on where it can and making it look like it's the easiest thing.

Don't follow me

Not a path, just natural stone, possibly always been there, lighting no way.

Twists and turns

Adaptable things trees. Who knows what caused it grow like this, the twists and turns to find direction but it knew and, whilst all beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think it looks all the better for it.

Trust nature

It's funny how things end up the way they are. Is it ever by accident or always by design? One thing is certain, nature never gets it wrong, never enters into anything it doesn't want to see in perpetuity. A good tenet to live by; invest your life in what's important to you and gives you the most personal reward and continuing happiness.

I chose you because I was inspired by you

I'm sure a tree doesn't mind being photographed. It must understands that a photographer seeks it out because it is interesting and wants to remember it, treasure it, create a personal dialogue. All the right reasons for photographing anything, that the beauty lies within the eye of the beholder.

Silver and Grey

Quite a complicated beast the Silver Birch, too much contrast it becomes an optical challenge to look at.
